Over 46 animals, each with their own distinct personality and excluding the tropical fish and Japanese koi, call Hilton Waikoloa Village home. The majority of the wildlife is in the Avian (Bird) Species. While exploring the resort, one may discover eight Chilean flamingo, three nene (Hawaii's state bird and the only goose native to the Hawaiian Islands), and black necked swans swimming in the pond adjacent to Palm Terrace restaurant. Additionally, an impeyan monal (type of pheasant), silver pheasant, reeves' pheasant, and three African crowned cranes can be found on the islands scattered about the lagoon canal and boatway. ![]() Six red-footed tortoises and several rare green sea turtles (who come and go as they please) live in the four-acre saltwater lagoon. You will often locate them gathered at the waterfall, as the alga makes a great meal. The lagoon also protects the turtles from other marine animals, as the green sea turtles are an endangered species. The canal boatway and ocean-fed lagoon are teeming with tropical saltwater fish of all varieties from yellow tangs and sergeant major or mamo to unicorn fish and spotted damsels. The resident four-foot barracuda named Elvis is notorious for appearing by Donatoni's restaurant's lanai right about dinnertime each evening. Approximately 645 Japanese Koi, a symbol of prosperity, strength, and courage, also swim about the resort, from the ponds at the Seaside Putting Course to the pond surrounding Imari and the Japanese teahouse. |
