Biography

Mohammad I. Younis received a Ph.D. degree in engineering mechanics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA, in 2004. From 2004-2013 he served as an assistant and then as an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering at the State University of New York (SUNY), Binghamton, NY. In 2013, he moved to King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia, where he served as an associate and then full professor of Mechanical Engineering and a Director of the MEMS and NEMS Characterization and Motion Laboratory. Dr. Younis is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in 2012, the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award in 2009, and the Paul E. Torgersen Graduate Research Excellence Award in 2002. He holds several U.S. patents in MEMS sensors and actuators. He serves as an Associate Editor of Nonlinear Dynamics, Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics, Journal of Vibration and Control, and Meccanica. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME and IEEE.Mohammad I. Biography

Qing-An Huang received the B.S. degree from the Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, China, in 1983; the M.S. degree from Xidian University, Xi’an, China, in 1987; and the Ph.D. degree from Southeast University, Nanjing, China, in 1991, all in electronics engineering. His Ph.D. research was focused on micromachined GaAs piezoelectric sensors.

He joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, Southeast University, after graduation, where he became a Full Professor in 1996, and was appointed as the Chang-Jiang Scholar by the Ministry of Education in 2004. He was a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 1997 to 1998, and a senior visiting scholar (1 month) at the Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center, University of California at Berkeley in 2017. He has been the Founding Director of the Key Laboratory of MEMS (the Ministry of Education) with the Southeast University since 2001. He has authored a book Silicon Micromachining Technology (Science Press, 1996), edited a book Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (Springer, 2018), authored or co-authored 4 international book chapters, over 200 peer-reviewed international journals/conference papers, and holds over 100 Chinese patents. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. He was a recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation Award of China in 2003.

Dr. Huang was a TPC Member of TRANSDUCERS from 2009 to 2019 and IEEE SENSORS Conference from 2002 to 2015. He was the Conference Co-Chair of the SPIE Microfabrication and Micromachining Process Technology and Devices (Proceedings of SPIE, vol. 4601, 2001), the TPC Co-Chair of the 7th IEEE International Conference on Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems (IEEE NEMS, Kyoto, Japan, 2012), and the TPC Co-Chair of the 6th Asia-Pacific Conference of Transducers and Micro/Nano Technologies (APCOT, Nanjing, China, 2012). He has been serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Sensors and Actuators since 2005. He is an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering.

Biography

Lina (P.M.) Sarro received the Laurea degree (cum laude) in solid-states physics from the University of Naples, Italy, in 1980. From 1981 to 1983, she was a post-doctoral fellow in the Photovoltaic Research Group of the Division of Engineering at Brown University, Rhode Island, U.S.A. In 1987 she received a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands,
and then joined the EE Faculty to establish and lead research on silicon micromachining, integrated sensor, MEMS and material processing. In 2001 she was appointed Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Full Professor for research merits. From 2009 to 2016 she was head of the Microelectronics Department (±70 research, teaching and support staff, more than 100 PhD students and 90-100 MSc students) and currently she is the head of the Electronic Components, Technology and Materials Laboratory.

Her main research interests are in novel materials and structures for MEMS and NEMS to be applied in health, automotive, environmental applications and scientific instrumentation. She has supervised 40 completed PhD theses (and 8 ongoing). She has (co)-authored more than 500 publications (H-index of 50) and 8 patents.

She is member of the International Steering Committee of Eurosensors, Transducers and IEEE MEMS and acted as General Chair and Technical Program Committee Chair several times for all major international conferences in the field of sensors, MEMS and microsystems. She is associate editor for the IEEE Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems and has been associate editor (2006-2009) for IEEE Sensors Journal. She serves on various international advisory boards and panels for research. She is/was also independent board member of Xensor Integration bv (since April 2007) and of MELEXIS Microelectronic Integrated Systems (2005-2014).

She is the recipient of the 2004 Eurosensors Fellow Award, The AISEM Career Award (2007), The IEEE 2012 Sensors Council Meritorious Award and the 2018 IEEE Robert Bosch Micro and Nano Systems Award and co-recipient of the Rudolph Kingslake Medal (1997). In 2017 she was one of the PIs for the NWO Gravity grant Netherlands Organ-on-Chip Initiative (NOCI). She is an IEEE Fellow, an (elected) member of the KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences) and member of its governing board (2008-2011), Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion and Knight in the Order of the Italian Star.

Biography

Shanthi Pavan obtained the B.Tech degree in Electronics and Communication Engg from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1995 and the M.S and Sc.D degrees from Columbia University, New York in 1997 and 1999 respectively. From 1997 to 2000, he was with Texas Instruments in Warren, New Jersey, where he worked on high speed analog filters and data converters. From 2000 to June 2002, he worked on microwave ICs for data communication at Bigbear Networks in Sunnyvale, California. Since July 2002, he has been with the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, where he is now a Professor of Electrical Engineering. His research interests are in the areas of high speed analog circuit design and signal processing.

Dr.Pavan is the recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Engineering Sciences (2012), IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Darlington Best Paper Award (2009), the Swarnajayanthi Fellowship (2010, from the Government of India) , the Young Faculty Recognition Award from IIT Madras (2009, for excellence in teaching) , the Technomentor Award from the India Semiconductor Association (2010) and the Young Engineer Award from the Indian National Academy of Engineering (2006). He has been the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems: Part I - Regular Papers (2014-2015), and earlier served on the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems Part II - Express Briefs (2006-2007). He has served as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Solid State Circuits Society, and on the technical program committee of the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

Biography

Francisco Falcone (M05, SM09) received his Telecommunication Engineering Degree in 1999 and his PhD in Communication Engineering in 2005, both from the Universidad Pública de Navarra (UPNA) in Spain. From February 1999 to April 2000 he was Microwave Commissioning Engineer at Siemens-Italtel, deploying microwave access systems. From May 2000 to December 2008 he was Radio Access Engineer at Telefónica Móviles, performing radio network planning and optimization tasks in mobile network deployment. In January 2009, as co-founding member, is the director of Tafco Metawireless, a spin-off company from UPNA, until may 2009. In parallel, he is Assistant Lecturer in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Dept., UPNA, from February 2003 to May 2009. In June 2009, he becomes Associate Professor in the EE Dept., being Dept. Head from January 2012 until July 2018. From January 2018 to May 2018 he was Visiting Professor at the Kuwait College of Science and Technology, in Kuwait. He is also affiliated with the Institute for Smart Cities (ISC) at UPNA, which hosts around 140 researchers, currently acting as Head of the ICT section. His research interests are related to computational electromagnetics applied to analysis of complex electromagnetic scenarios, with a focus on the analysis, design and implementation of heterogeneous wireless networks to enable context aware environments. He has over 500 contributions in indexed international journals, book chapters and conference contributions. He has been awarded the CST 2003 and CST 2005 Best Paper Award, PhD Award from the Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación (COIT) in 2006, Doctoral Award UPNA, 2010, 1st Juan Gomez Peñalver Research Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain in 2010, XII Talgo Innovation Award 2012, IEEE 2014 Best Paper Award, 2014, ECSA-3 Best Paper award, 2016 and ECSA-4 Best Paper Award, 2017.

Biography

Ajay Agarwal is Sr. Principal Scientist, Coordinator, Smart Sensors Area, & Head of Nano Biosensors Group at CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute, Pilani; involved in the development of Nanotechnologies MEMS, microfluidics and Micro-sensors. He is also Professor at Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), New Delhi. Earlier as Member of Technical Staff he served Institute of Microelectronics, Singapore for over 9 years. He received B.Eng. from NIT, Rourkela followed by M.S. and Ph.D. from BITS, Pilani. His engagement with semiconductor industries and research institutes is for over 26 years. He has about 230 research publications in peer-reviewed journals or international conferences, over 35 invited/ plenary/ keynote talks and over 25 patents (granted or filled). Dr. Ajay has chaired/ co-chaired symposiums and conference sessions and repeatedly reviewing technical papers for numerous journals. He has supervised several Ph.D., masters and undergraduate students for thesis and project work in India and overseas. He is associated with professional societies like Senior member of IEEE, USA; Life Fellow of MSI (India), The Institution of Engineers (India) and IETE (India), and member MRS, Singapore [till 2009], etc.

He is bestowed with various awards including 2008 National Technology Award, Singapore; 2009 Excellence Award, IME Singapore; “Collaboration Development Award” British High Commission, Singapore for the year 2005 and 2006, Super Kaizen (4 times) and Best Kaizen(7 times) at USHA (India) Ltd., etc. His biography is included in the Who’s Who in the World, which profiles the most accomplished men and women in the world since 2010 and in Who’s Who in Asia since 2012.

Development of Micro-, Nano-technologies, MEMS and semiconductor processes for various applications are his main research interests. He has been instrumental in numerous collaborative projects with industries/ universities like Sony, Japan; Opaldia, UK; SiMEMS, Singapore; BioChip Innovations, Australia; Silver Brook, Ireland and Australia; ST Kinetics, Singapore; Panasonic, Japan; Intelligent Chip Connections, Singapore; NUS, NTU, Univ. of London, etc. Some of his achievements include the development of silicon nanowire-based devices including electronic biochemical sensor system integrated with fluidics and read-out electronics; development of biochips like lateral patch-clamp arrays, micro-fluidics on transparent substrates, Cell sorter cum counter, Micro-viscometer, etc.; silicon-based nanostructured substrates for Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), gas sensors, etc. He has also contributed significantly to the development of silicon micro-mirror arrays; polysilicon interconnects for 3D-stacking, implantable neural probes, etc.

Biography

Dr. Paul C.-P. Chao received his Ph.D. degree from Michigan State University, USA, and then with Chrysler Corp in Auburn Hill, Detroit, USA before joined National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), Taiwan. He is currently University Distinguished Professor of the electrical engineering department at NCTU, and Distinguished Lecturer for IEEE Sensors Council, 2018 – 2010. His research interests focus on sensors, actuators and their interface circuitry. Dr. Chao has published more than 280 peer-reviewed papers (books, journal papers, conferences, reports) and 38 patents.

Dr. Chao was the recipient of the 1999 Arch T. Dr. Chao received major IEEE awards for this service: The IEEE Large Section Award from IEEE Head Quarter for the outstanding service as the Secretary for 2009-2010, and The IEEE MGA Award from IEEE Region 10 for outstanding service as the Secretary for IEEE Taipei Section, 2009-2010. He was the General Chair of the 2016 ASME ISPS and IoT conference in Santa Clara, CA, USA; chairs and co-chairs of major conferences. For editorial services, he is currently Topical Editors of IEEE Sensors Journal and IEEE IoT Journal. He was the Associate Editors of ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics and Journal of Circuit, System and Computer; guest editors of special journal issues. Dr. Chao received the award of the 2017 Best Topical Editor, Runner up, IEEE Sensors Journal. He is a senior member of IEEE and ASME Fellow.
